DTC Botswana launches toll-free number
06-08-2009
On 06th August 2009, DTC Botswana held a function to launch a toll-free number to help curb illegal diamond trafficking, theft, fraud, and crime syndicate activities. Dignitaries at the function included the Assistant Commissioner (Public Relations) of the Botswana Police Services, Mr. Christopher Mbulawa; the Diamond and Narcotics squad; as well as representatives from the diamond cutting and polishing factories in Botswana. Welcoming this gesture by DTC Botswana, Mr. Mbulawa emphasized that toll-free numbers are made to give whistle-blowers an opportunity to report crimes without revealing themselves. Driving this point home and showing the importance of diamonds to Botswana, Mbulawa said, “It is our collective responsibility to make sure that no theft of diamonds or trafficking takes place in our country as this will render our diamonds valueless bringing more harm than the current credit crunch.” Interpreting the importance of diamonds to the Botswana economy, the DTC Botswana Head of Operations, Mr. Pat Jacobs, highlighted that diamonds are the single largest contributor to the country’s GDP and government spending. This statement consolidated the fact that it is through this toll-free number that that the country can safe-guard against any misgivings that will bring the diamond industry into disrepute. DTC Botswana remains committed to the Kimberly Certification Process and this toll-free number will further help enhance its stand against illegal diamond trafficking. The toll free number is: 0800 700 706 For more information, please contact: Kago Mmopi Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Manager DTC Botswana Tel (w): +267 3649270 Mobile: +267 72303132 kmmopi@dtcb.co.bw |
