Yesterday, DTC Botswana held its inaugural Young Leaders Workshop, focused on employees aged 35 and under, marking a strategic initiative aimed at cultivating emerging leadership talent critical for organisational resilience and innovation.
The workshop was led by Mr. Sedireng ‘Sed’ Serumola, the Managing Director of DTC Botswana. Sed’s personal journey, which began in a single-parent household with the early responsibility of herding livestock while his peers engaged in formal education, informed his approach to leadership development. Throughout his diverse career, he shared significant milestones and the nuanced pathways encountered, offering deep insights into the complex dynamics of leadership roles, particularly in navigating both challenges and opportunities.
A central theme in Sed’s presentation was the identification of essential leadership competencies for thriving in today’s volatile and fast-paced market landscape. He emphasized the necessity of strategic thinking as a fundamental skill for foreseeing market trends and enabling data-driven decision-making processes. Emotional intelligence was also highlighted as pivotal for cultivating effective team dynamics and driving employee engagement across all levels.
Adaptability emerged as another crucial component; in an environment characterized by rapid transformation, the capacity to adjust in response to unforeseen challenges is paramount. Additionally, Sed pointed to the critical role of effective communication—not only in articulating a compelling vision but also in fostering receptivity to feedback—as a key facilitator of team performance and overall organisational efficacy.
Participants engaged in in-depth discussions, critically evaluating these competencies and contemplating their practical applications in their specific roles. They engaged with real-world scenarios and exchanged personal experiences, enriching the dialogue and enhancing their grasp of how to effectively leverage these skills for increased productivity and organisational impact.
Ultimately, the workshop went beyond knowledge dissemination; it acted as a catalyst for participants to commit to ongoing professional development and a culture of lifelong learning. By investing in the competencies of its younger workforce, DTC Botswana is strategically positioning itself to nurture adept leaders capable of driving the organisation forward in an increasingly complex future.
